Judith E. (Schmitt) Townsend

Judith E. Townsend, of Mattydale passed away Thursday Morning, March 14, 2024 in Matthew House, Auburn. Born December 26, 1941 in Syracuse, she was the daughter of the late Gustave and Eleanor Smith Schmitt. Judith began her career working for GE of Syracuse in their Defense Systems Department. She later transferred to Daytona Beach, FL, working in the Apollo Support Department, contributing to the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space program from 1962 to 1969. This work would culminate with the first man on the moon in 1969. Judith later would join the Army Reserves 403rd Civil Affairs Unit from 1976 to 1979, being honorably discharged as a Seargent. She was employed as a surgical registrar for Crouse Hospital before finally retiring from her job in Labor Relations, Region 5 with the CSEA. 

She is survived by one brother Peter Schmitt; Cousin’s; Patricia Newberry and Barbara Clancy (Michael). In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by one sister Carol Harvey. 

Friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service to be offered Friday, March 22, 2024 at 11:00 am in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron. Arrangements are with White Chapel Funeral Home, 2719 Erie Drive, Weedsport.
