It is only now and still with the deepest sorrow that we are able to share that on the eve of December 8 2023, Carol E Gruman departed this earth. She passed away at her home with her family by her side.
She was born November 20, 1937 at the French Hospital in NYC, the only child of Harry and Edith Ludwig.
Carol spent most of her childhood in Maine where she attended Gould Academy during a school year and Luther Gulick camps in the summer. Any free time was spent at her aunt and uncle’s home on Lake Sabago or her new family home in New Jersey; where two of her three children were born.
She attended Stony Brook and then transferred to Syracuse University. This is where she met her first husband and settled in Weedsport.
After her third child she started working for the Weedsport Post Office, and had to retire early due to her health.
She loved people and loved entertaining. She was equally at home fishing and canoeing on the river or attending various theater productions as well as wining and dining with her dear friend, Tom Gilfus.
She was famous for her hospitality and more often than not, she would have house guests in residence. It was because of this, her friends referred to her home as the “Grand Hotel”.
She was a member of the Weedsport Community Theater and also appeared in several dinner theater productions by Plateaus Productions. She was a member of the Citizens Against Pollution Committee, and a friend of the library.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Kerry Weeks; her son, Dylan Adams; her two granddaughters; Christina Adams and Marissa Adams; and four great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son Christopher Weeks and her grandson Shawn Adams.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Carols name may be made to the Weedsport Fire Department or the Weedsport Free Library.
We are sorry that it took this long to share the news of her passing. We could not bring ourselves to say the Hotel is now permanently closed.
A graveside service will be held Thursday May 23rd at 12pm noon at the Weedsport Rural Cemetery. Following the service there will be a gathering at the Springside Inn. All are welcome to attend.
Arrangements are with the White Chapel Funeral Home, Weedsport.
