David Johnston Obituary

David R. Johnston, 71, of Auburn, New York passed away Friday, July 24th, 2026, with family by his side following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Geneva New York on June 16th,1955, David was the son of the late Charles V. Johnston Jr. and Helen L. (Carpenter) Johnston.

David was a 1973 graduate of Santa Rita High School in Tucson, AZ. Following graduation David served in the United States Air Force completing six years of service. After his military career David worked as a contractor specializing in overhead doors, subsequently building a career in facilities maintenance until his retirement in 2017.

David was a devoted and proud father to his five children, Michael Johnston of Niagra Falls ON, Rebecca Johnston (Eric Wilcox) of Syracuse NY, David Johnston (Melanie) of Moravia NY, Jacob Johnston of Auburn NY, and Nicholas Johnston (Tate Mason) of Auburn NY.  David was also a devoted grandfather to his grand children Zuri, Zander, Jillian and Liam.

David had a positive impact on anybody who knew him, he was dependable, hard working, humorous, and compassionate. He will be remembered for his selfless nature, always willing to lend a hand or offer his support. David enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, playing chess, scrabble and tending to his beloved vegetable garden.

David had a lifelong love of sports and competition, cycling being his greatest passion. David took any chance he could to ride on the open roads, having competed in many local Great Race events over the years. David faithfully followed the professional cycling tour as well, the sport brought him immense joy.

In addition to his children and grandchildren David is survived by his five siblings, Gerard (Carol) Johnston of Austin TX, Christopher Johnston of Austin TX, JoAnn Harris of Auburn NY, Jacqueline (John) Agati of Auburn NY, Theodore (Debra) Johnston of Cayuga NY and several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with David’s wishes no funeral or memorial services will be held. In his final act of generosity, he has chosen to donate his body to medical science to help educate the future of healthcare and medical professionals.
