Douglas Malcolm Kinney (Doug, Fred) passed peacefully on May 23, 2024, in his home with family in Moravia, NY. He was 75 years old.
He is survived by his sister Alice Monar, brother Frank and wife Sallie (Thomas) Kinney, and twin brother Charles and wife Glenna (Bellinger) Kinney. Uncle Doug was loved and survived by numerous nieces and nephews: Cindy and Jim Towle, Elisabeth Kinney, Maureen and Scott Angotti, Michael Kinney and Greta Smolnisky, Beth and David Palmer, Sarah Kinney, John and Courtney (Urban) Monar, Joe Monar, Gina and Bill Barkley, Chuck Kinney, Chad and Alyssa (Evans) Kinney. Doug is survived by numerous other relatives, friends, and sailors/submariners. He was predeceased by his parents Francis and Beatrice (Chubb) Kinney, brothers James and Russell, sisters-in-law Roberta (Upson) Kinney, Mary Jo (McAuliffe) Kinney and Maureen (Michael) Kinney, and brother-in-law Jerome Monar.
Doug grew up in Hyattsville, MD. He traveled the world both under and above the sea, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and electrician in nuclear powered submarines. In 1979 he and the other U.S.S. Archerfish sailors were declared Royal Bluenoses after surfacing in the Arctic Circle. Upon leaving the Navy, Doug worked for various companies on power backup systems.
Doug was an avid reader of history, geography, and science, lover of Celtic culture, appreciator of Mother Nature, connoisseur of European pastries, and helper to those in need. Chiefly, Doug was the proud Dad to 14 beloved pets, particularly his cherished Border Collies: Slim, Buster, Duncan, Herbert, Mr. Beans, Hank, Fred, Charlene, and Otis.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 30th, 2024, from 0930-1030 with a service to immediately follow at 1030 all in White Chapel Funeral Home 197 South St. Auburn, NY 13021. A military burial will be conducted on Friday, June 21st at 10am in the NY State Veterans Cemetery, Finger Lakes 6632 NY96A Romulus, NY 14541
