Joan Purcell, 87, of Auburn, passed away Monday, February 12, 2024, at The Commons on St. Anthony surrounded by her family. Mrs. Purcell was born in Syracuse, NY on August 9, 1936, to the late Oscar and Arilla Jones Brown. Joan was previously employed as a cook at Balloons Restaurant in Auburn. She enjoyed playing sports and games; if you knew Joan you knew she was competitive with both. She was a great cook and was always baking delicious treats. She had a talent for ceramics and won second prize at the NYS Fair. Joan loved to spend summers with her late husband, Harold camping at River Forest Campgrounds. Throughout her life, Joan loved to be on the go and was extremely social. That continued during her time at The Commons where she enjoyed playing BINGO, Bunco and puzzles. Everyone at The Commons referred to her as "Queen Joanie".
Joan is survived by her daughter Vicky (Joseph) Lupien; her son Mark (Amy) Purcell; daughter-in-law, Mary Purcell; sister, Renee Amidon;
grandchildren, Krista (Amy) Cosgrove-Purcell, Matthew Lupien, Andrew Lupien; her great grandchildren, Dakota Lupien and Reese Purcell; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her husband Harold in 2022, her son, Roger; one brother and six sisters.
The Purcell family would like to thank Joan's nieces and nephew; Kathy, Jimmy and Arlene for the many casino trips they took Joan on.
A special thank you also the staff at The Commons for their compassionate care and friendship shown to Joan and her family.
A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming in the spring.
Donations in Joan's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
