John L. Ashby, 84, of Auburn and formerly of Weedsport, passed away on July 18, 2024, at Auburn Nursing Home. Born in Brutus, NY on October 11, 1939, John was the son of the late John N. and Dorothy (Farrington) Ashby. He proudly served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. John was employed with the Carrier Corporation for 35 years as a machinist and also drove school bus for 20 years in Long Island and locally. In his earlier years, he and his wife, Joan, travelled to many different states along the east coast while involved in roller skating dance competitions. They were also involved in drag racing for many years in Long Island and racing late model stock cars in Weedsport, Canandaigua, Waterloo and Rolling Wheels. John was an avid golfer and hunter and flew light aircraft fliers. He was a previous member of the Weedsport Winter Wanderers and served as President for 1 year. John was an excellent bowler, achieving 7, 300 games during his life. He was a member of various bowling leagues and was inducted into the Auburn Bowling Hall of Fame. He and Joan were also lane inspectors for many years. They enjoyed travelling and were able to take a memorable trip to Alaska.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Ashby; his sons, David (Diane) Ashby and John P. (Maria) Ashby; his sister, LouAnn (Tom) Elliott and his grandchildren, Aletta Simpson, Cheyanne Clark and Austin Ashby.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his siblings, Richard Chapman, Robert Chapman, Ronald Chapman and Garrie Lee Ashby.
Calling hours for John will be held on Tuesday, July 23rd from 11am - 1pm in White Chapel Funeral Home, 2719 Erie Drive, Weedsport NY. A funeral service will follow at 1pm in the funeral home, with interment in Weedsport Rural Cemetery.
