Joseph Hamel Obituary

Joseph C. "Red" Hamel, 91 of 8544 South Street Rd., Port Byron, beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, with his loving family by his side.

A hard-working provider for his family, Joe was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and moved to New York in 1959, with his three young daughters to continue his career as a lineman for IBEW Local 1249 out of Syracuse. He worked for the local as a lineman and later as a high voltage underground cable splicer for over 40 years, traveling throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Joe is survived by his four loving children, Wendy Hamel of Port Byron, Terry Petrosino of Auburn, Sheila Smith (Earl Sr.) of Port Byron and Michael Hamel (Lori) of Cayuga; 13 grandchildren Jeff, Joe and Jack Morehouse, Kaylee and Marissa Petrosino, Earl Smith Jr. (Ashley), Stacy Kreydatus (Mike), Crystal Seabury (Nick), Jeremy Dunn (Gina), Gregg Hamel (Ashley), Mitchell Hamel, Jennifer (Joshua) Mejorado and Michael Hamel; 12 great grandchildren; his brother Denny Hamel (Mona) of Stittsville, Canada and sister in law Mavis O'Neil of Ottawa Canada.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Joseph A. and Elsie Hamel of Canada; his amazing wife Marjorie "Midge" Hamel; his son Eric Hamel; and his son in law Captain Billy Petrosino.

Anybody that knew Joe, known as "Red" by most of his friends, knew he was probably one of the strongest men around. He survived a fall off a power line tower in 1953 when he was a lineman and came down with spinal meningitis in 1967 when he was an underground cable splicer.

Following retirement, he enjoyed playing cards nightly with Midge and doing crossword puzzles. During the day, you could find him working in his shop, meticulously welding, fixing cars, etc. His children knew they could always depend on their dad to take care of their vehicles and pretty much anything. His motto was "If HE couldn't fix it, then it couldn't be fixed!"

Per Joe's wishes, private burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., Weedsport. Contributions may be made in memory of Joe to the Port Byron Volunteer Fire Dept., 50 Utica Street, Port Byron, NY 13140, or to a charity of one's choice.
