Obituary

Karen Ann (Sica) Bailey

After a courageous battle with cancer, Karen passed away on 4/29/2022 while surrounded by her loving family. Karen was born on 7/13/1955 at Glens Falls Hospital to Joseph and Dorothy Sica of Lake George.

In addition to her parents, Karen was predeceased by her sister- Ronnie Coulter, nephew- Shane Elder, great-nephew- David Elder, and her beloved dog Neeko.

She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Les Bailey; her daughters, Tara Adams (Levi), Amy Manuel (Jake Falso); her beloved granddaughters, Hailey, Mya, Kendall, Alexa, and Chelsea; her siblings, Wayne Sica (Jeanne), Sheila Grady (Joseph), Judy Haff, Jill Hunt, and Jack Sica (Roberto Font), along with many nieces and nephews and her sidekick Puppy.

Karen worked many jobs until she found her dream job as a teaching assistant at Warrensburg Elementary School. Along with being a teaching assistant at the school, Karen was president of the CSEA employee's union and was very devoted to helping others. One of her favorite activities at the school was the yearly whale watch field trip.

Karen was known for her strength and determination after battling cancer in 2003 and was a recipient at the 2004 South Glens Falls High School Marathon Dance. Once in remission, Karen returned to the dance year after year with quilts that she handmade and donated to have auctioned at the dance. She was a guest speaker at the opening ceremony for several years and was a member of the recipient room committee. In addition to making quilts, Karen helped grieving families by making memory bears out of their loved one's clothing, including memory bears for her own family from her mother's wedding gown.

Karen was not only an amazing wife and incredible mother but had a love for her grandchildren like no other. Karen was determined to make this second chance at life matter and wanted to make the most of every moment with her family. She organized an annual tea party for her daughters and granddaughters that meant so much to her.

When Karen was diagnosed with cancer for a second, third, and forth time, her strength did not dwindle. She made it to every single event that her grandchildren had and made every moment count. Her spirit was contagious to everyone she encountered. All doctors and nurses were stunned by her courage at every appointment.

Karen and her family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Liu and her team at the Lattimore Medical Center in Rochester, Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY (Auburn location) and the doctors and nurses in CICU at Auburn Memorial Hospital.

In Lieu of flowers, Karen wanted donations made in her name to the following organizations: South High Marathon Dance, St. Jude’s Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
