Leatrice E. Merkley, 85, formerly of Elbridge and Port Byron, passed away Monday March 16, 2026, in Laurel House, Newark, NY. Born in Syracuse on December 8, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Maude McNabb Youngs. Leatrice worked at several local businesses throughout her life, including the Elbridge True Value and packing meat at the Big M. In the late 1980's, she owned and operated "Nutty Buddies" Ice Cream in Weedsport along with her life-long friend, Andrea Ceratt. Known for being very outgoing, Leatrice was a social butterfly who loved giving, and getting, a good hug. She was a lover of all animals and enjoyed living in Florida for about 10 years with her late husband David, who passed away in 2018.
She is survived by three daughters Lee A. Ferretti (Lou), Michele Anderson (John) and Roberta Showens (Don); two sons Dale Merkley (Victoria) and Albert Merkley; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Leatrice is predeceased by her brothers Louis, Robert and George Youngs and by her son David Merkley, and grandson David Merkley, Jr.
Calling hours for Leatrice will be conducted on Friday, March 20, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the White Chapel Funeral Home, 2719 Erie Drive, Weedsport. Leatrice was most recently a long-time member of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2468 Willow Brook Road, Auburn, NY 13021. A memorial service will be held there on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 3:00 pm.
