Max Appleby Sr. Obituary

July 9, 1934 - July 20, 2025
Max Appleby Sr., 91, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday July 20, 2025.

Max was a lifelong resident in Weedsport on Towpath Road; a home filled with memories, love, and generations of family stories, including cherishing his fond memories of childhood adventures along the Erie Canal. He worked for the NY Central Railroad. Max proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Max also worked for the village of Weedsport. He retired after 27 years as the Building and Grounds Superintendent at Weedsport Central High School. He loved carpentry, hand crafting treasured pieces of art, auctions, and took pride in putting his democrat horse wagon in the Weedsport parades and taking the family camping in Maine and ADK.

Home was Max's sanctuary-especially when he was near the warm glow of his woodstove. He was devoted to his family and friends, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Max loved organizing large gatherings, especially 4th of July parties and Christmas celebrations that brought loved ones together.

Max is survived by his daughter, Christine (Mathew) Grudzien; son, Max (Judy) Appleby; daughter, Jeanette (Fred) Manwaring and their loving mother, Marion Appleby. He was a proud grandfather to Max C. Appleby, Lexi Appleby, Amie (Greg) Fatcheric, Jessica (Jason) Gwinn, and Charles (Katie Carter) Grudzien. He was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren Alison, Jenna, Meagan, Grace, Sophia, Avery, Gavin, Charles, Owen and Ryan; and one great-great-grandchild Melody. He is also survived by his brother William (Debra) Applebee, a niece, a nephew, and many cousins.

Max was predeceased by his loving parents, William and Margaret (Wandle) Applebee, as well as uncles, aunts, and extended family.

The family wishes to thank Hammersley Home Care and the Centerwell nursing staff for their compassionate care; as well as the Weedsport/Jordan EMS and Dr. Boyle. A special thank-you to everyone who sent Max cards filled with warm thoughts and to those who always kept him in their prayers.
