Nancy Short passed away after a brief illness at her home on April 17th surrounded by her loving family.
Nancy spent her life as a caregiver for her five children and her six grandchildren, and as a certified nursing assistant for many years at Mercy Rehabilitation Center, Auburn Memorial Hospital, and the Home on Grant Avenue, where her mother Mary Hubbard was a longtime resident.
Nancy was a mentor to young women in the nursing assistant field and kept in touch with many of them.
Along with her late husband Doug, Nancy enjoyed trips with the Prison City Ramblers Car Club to Lake George with their close-knit group of friends.
Nancy never missed a sporting event that her children and grandchildren participated in, traveling all over New York. She was their biggest cheerleader. She was all-time quarterback and pitcher in family backyard games, and she taught everyone the secret to making a basketball free throw.
Sports were a passion for her, and she spent many hours watching NY Yankees baseball, Syracuse Orange men’s and women’s basketball, and any women’s sporting event that was televised.
Family was the most important thing to Nancy, and she loved hosting family holiday dinners (her Thanksgiving stuffing was a classic). Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren could always be found at her weekly Sunday Donut Hours. Her home was filled with dozens of family photos and cherished memories.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Mary Hubbard, her husband Doug, and her beloved aunt Ellen Emerson.
She is survived by her children Diane (Scott) LaRue, Denise, Douglas, and Eric Short, Melissa Morrissey, her grandchildren J.D. (Anna Remacha) LaRue, Ryan (Christine Chen) LaRue, Tyler James (Courtney) Short, Chelsea (Tyler) Smith, Allison (Daniel) Carter, Erin Morrissey (Ryley O’Brien), her great-grandchildren Martina LaRue, Charles and Sam Short, and Abby and Blake Smith, her sister Sharon (Dan) Gonnella and brother Keith (Cindy) Hubbard.
Calling hours will be held Monday April 20th from 4-6pm at White Chapel Funeral Home in Auburn and a funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church in Auburn on Tuesday, April 21st at 9:30am.
Donations in Nancy’s name may be made to Hospice of Central New York.
