Nancy W. Smith, 73, of Auburn, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. Born in Auburn on November 11, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Glenn and Eleanor (Conte) Wright.
A 1969 graduate and Salutatorian of Mount Carmel, Nancy went on to serve honorably in the United States Marine Corps until 1972. Her lifelong commitment to service extended far beyond her military years. She earned two BA degrees in college from CCC & Empire State College. Nancy was a devoted member of Holy Family Church, where she gave generously of her time and heart — coordinating faith formation for over a decade, leading RCIA, serving as a Eucharistic minister, and embracing countless volunteer roles within the parish.
Nancy’s generosity knew no bounds. She was a prolific donor to organizations she believed in, and helped people with her time and support. She was a thoughtful correspondent and enjoyed connecting with lifelong friends and family. In quieter moments, she found peace in puzzles, reading, British TV drama and prayer.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Leonard, and their children: Maureen Smith (Nickie), Miriam Smith, Miles Smith, Teresa Bell (Michael), Valerie Zhang (Christopher), and Suzanne Ackley (Daniel). She was a grandmother to Michael, Christopher, Christal, Alfie, and Everett, and sister to Carol Wiseman and Isabel Wright. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her dearly.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025 in St. Alphonsus Church.
In honor of Nancy’s generous spirit, contributions may be made to Unity House Day Hab, Auburn.
