Noreen P. Gettel, 67, of Moravia, passed away unexpectedly on January 26, 2024, at Crouse Hospital. Noreen was born in Queens, NY on October 30, 1956, daughter of the late James and Hannah (Doherty) Kneafsey. She was a Registered Nurse employed with the VA Hospital in Syracuse for 28 years. Noreen was a force. She lit up a room with her beautiful smile and infectious laugh. She made it her life’s mission to bring joy to others. She had a special way of making the people around her feel loved with her endless deliveries of baked goods both near and far, her spontaneous adventures with her family and friends and her kind heart. Noreen was an avid fan of Syracuse football and basketball, attending many games with her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to concerts with her husband, baking and crocheting, making her family many blankets over the years. Noreen was an all-star grandmother, attending every sporting event for her grandchildren, supporting them in each of their endeavors and was highly involved in the Moravia Sports Boosters. She loved spending time by the pond at her home and appreciated a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Being on or by the ocean with her family were moments that she cherished. Her energy and love for life has left a lasting impact on those closest to her. She has left so many feeling blessed to have been part of her story.
Noreen is survived by her loving husband, Gary Gettel of 49 years, her daughter, Kelly (Jared) Proper; her son, James (Jody) Gettel; sister, Kathleen McGurn; brother, James Kneafsey; her beloved grandchildren, Kyler and Brooke Proper and Allyssa and Jeffrey Gettel and her best friends, Kim Lisi and Nancy Crumley. Noreen will be greatly missed by her two rescued dogs Buddy and Abby who brought her much love and joy.
Calling hours for Noreen will be held on Saturday, February 3rd from 11am -1pm in White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South Street, Auburn. A funeral service will follow at 1pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY or the Moravia Sports Boosters, both of which were organizations close to her heart.
