Penalyn “Penny” J. Hobart, 78, of Weedsport, passed away on May 28, 2020 in the comfort of her home surrounded by the love of her family. Penny was born in Flushing, New York, to the late Richard and Alida LaForce. While raised in Central New York, as a teenager she spent winters in Florida and graduated from Miami Edison High School. Following her graduation, Penny completed secretarial school at Charron Williams. It was in Miami where Penny met and married Merrill (Mel) Hobart on May 24, 1961. They returned to CNY and made Weedsport their home in 1967. In addition to raising a family, Penny worked in local retail, at such classics as W.T. Grant & Co., Whitman’s Hardware Store and Sandy’s Stop & Shop. In the decade leading up to her retirement, she was employed as a convenience store manager. Penny’s smile greeted the early morning customers at The Pit Stop and Jordan Mini-Mart. Penny enjoyed gardening, sewing, wallpapering and painting. During her lifetime, she completed numerous projects for family and friends, many of which were true labors of love. In the days and years ahead, some of her finished work will continue to serve as precious reminders of that love and devotion. Penny perfected the art of making hard candy at Christmas. This tradition was a favorite during the holiday season for those who had the pleasure of receiving her gift. Penny leaves behind her daughters, Elaine and Kathleen Hobart; son, David and daughter-in-law, Cathy Hobart; cherished granddaughters, Alyssa and Lindsey Hobart; and great-grandson, Hunter, whom she adored. Penny is also survived by her sister, Mary Tingiris and brother, Robert (Judy) LaForce; sisters-in-law, Rosie and Carol LaForce; and several nieces and nephews. Penny was predeceased in September by her husband of 58 years, Mel; her brothers James, Mel, Hal and Curt LaForce; and niece, Eileen LaForce. Arrangements have been entrusted to White Chapel Funeral Home. A private celebration of Penny’s life will be held when flowers are in full bloom. The family extends their gratitude to Hospice of the Finger Lakes for the compassionate care and support given to both Penny and Mel.
