Robert W. Reed (affectionately known as Buzz), 87, passed away peacefully in Auburn, New York on December 12, 2019. A lifelong resident of Auburn, he was born January 29, 1932 and was the eldest of three sons of Raymond and Dorothy Reed. Bob served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in St. John’s Newfoundland, Bob met the love of his life Mabel. After his service in the Air Force, Bob and Mabel moved to Bob’s hometown Auburn.
For 35 years, Bob was employed by the New York Telephone Company (Verizon). After retiring, he worked many jobs that he enjoyed. His final professional career was an experience he cherished working as a City Code Enforcement Officer alongside the Auburn Fire Department.
Bob was an active member of the community. In his early years, he was a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. Bob was politically active, serving on a number of local Democratic committees for many years. Following in his father’s footsteps, Bob was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post 97. He was also a member of the Forty and Eight Veterans organization. Additionally, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed time with friends at the Utopia Club.
Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Mabel; his two brothers, Jack and Charles (Chappy); brothers-in-law, George Hillier and Harvey, and sister-in-law, Edith.
Bob is survived by his five children, Mark (Debbie) Reed, Robyn (Wes) Carr, Janice (Rich) Sarnicola, Gary (Lori) Reed, Ryan (Kim) Reed; six grandchildren, Shawn (Erin) Reed, Erin Reed, Lauren Reed, Joe Carr, Brady Reed, Matthew Reed; five great-grandchildren; Kylie, Cara, Tyler, Aiden and Evan. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Susan Reed, Linda Reed and Jean Hillier, several nephews John Reed, Chris Reed, Sean Reed, Casey Reed and Howard Hillier.
Bob’s family would like to thank the 2nd floor staff at the Commons on St. Anthony in Auburn for all their dedication, kindness and compassion given to our father during his stay there.
Family and friends may call from 4pm-7pm, Monday, December 23, at The White Chapel Funeral Home, 197 South Street in Auburn, NY with services immediately following. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
