Thomas S. Charles, 74, of Syracuse and formerly of Auburn, passed away on April 24, 2026, at his home. Born in Auburn on September 23, 1951, Tom was the son of the late Edward and Virginia (Kierst) Charles.
Tom worked as a mechanic with Summit Chevrolet and later for New York State as a toll collector. A hardworking man, he took great pride in his work and especially in his passion for cars, often sharing his knowledge with others.
A man of few words, Tom showed his love through his actions. He was a devoted father who never missed a holiday, birthday, or important moment. He created lasting memories with his children through time spent in the garage and on trips, including visits to Washington, D.C.
Tom was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and a true sports enthusiast. Bowling was a major part of his life—he was named Auburn Bowling Association “Bowler of the Year” for the 1989–1990 season, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001, and recorded the association’s highest series with an 850. He was a proud green jacket bowler and highly respected in the bowling community.
Above all, Tom was a man of integrity, loyalty, and quiet strength. He was a loving grandfather—“Papa”—who cherished his grandchildren, and an exceptional father whose presence shaped his family’s lives.
Thomas is survived by his children, Rebecca (Rob) Hamilton and Steven (Cassie) Charles; his fiancée, Linda Stewart; his brother, Ed Charles; and his grandchildren, Sophia Hamilton, and Riley and Reese Charles.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, David Charles, Barbara Charles Kraushaar, Richard Charles, and Francis “Tim” Charles.
Friends are invited to visit on Friday, May 1st from 4:00–6:00 pm at White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South Street, Auburn, NY.
