Wilbur Mapley Jr. Obituary

Wilbur Kenneth Mapley Jr., 89, of Port Byron, passed away on January 5, 2025, in Syracuse, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.

He was born in Ira, the son of Wilbur K. Mapley Sr. and Doris Van Norstrand Mapley. He was a graduate of Port Byron High School, class of 1953. He was a proud veteran, who served in the US Navy as a weatherman; while stationed in Japan, he also climbed Mt. Fuji. He retired as a parts man from Burke's Hardware after twenty years, finding his work with local farmers to be his calling.

He was a longtime SU basketball fan, avid bowler, cloud watcher, Seinfeld devotee, and garlic farmer. Since his retirement, he had travelled extensively, including halibut fishing in Alaska, touring Niagara Falls in Canada on Maid of the Mist, and riding his first rollercoaster at 82 years of age at Walt Disney World in Florida.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Patricia; his beloved daughter Trysha; his treasured son Scott; and his cherished granddaughters, Chloë Mapley and Madeline Weibley. Wilbur is also lovingly remembered by his brother James (Elizabeth) Mapley; his sisters Shirley Palen and Linda (Ronald) Millus; as well as several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart. He was predeceased by his father in 1975, his mother in 2004, and both his cousin Charles Mapley, and youngest brother Richard Mapley, in 2020.

Wilbur was a humble, reserved person who exemplified quiet strength, he never liked being the center of attention. His beautiful blue eyes were always ready with a wink and smile; he was a bit of a prankster, and his laughter was infectious. Like his father, feeding people made him happy; he was the king of chicken BBQ and cheese omelets. He loved coffee and donuts with his girls, golf, comedy, his old dog "The General", and his family most of all. He was a gentle man who exemplified integrity, kindness, and generosity and he will be remembered by us all with immeasurable love.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central New York Chapter.
